Description
The Splinter States is a collective term for the numerous smaller, independent countries and kingdoms scattered across Altazia. These nations were born in the bloody aftermath of the Splinter Wars, when the Old Alliance fractured under Eldemar's heavy-handed centralization.
Caught between the massive military and economic might of the "Big Three," the Splinter States survive through intense diplomacy, shifting alliances, and formidable defensive militaries. The invention of firearms during the Splinter Wars proved that smaller nations could hold off vast armies of traditional noble mages — permanently leveling the geopolitical playing field.
History
Before the Splinter Wars, much of this region was united under the Old Alliance. When Eldemar attempted to aggressively centralize power, constituent states rebelled. The resulting century-long conflict shattered the alliance and gave birth to the fiercely independent nations of the modern era.
