Twilight and Silence
Twilight and Silence
- When: 900–1500 STC (~600 years of slow collapse)
Stagnation and Decentralization
After 900 years of expansion, the Ikosian Empire ran out of viable lands to conquer. Internal rot set in. The House System — once the fuel for rapid expansion — became its fatal flaw. Houses grew autonomous, entrenched in political backstabbing. Centralized rule fractured. The Empire technically persisted for another 500 years (enduring 12 dynastic changes and numerous civil wars), but it bled territory constantly.
The Five Towers Period (Altazia)
The Ikosian colonies in Altazia were officially abandoned by the retreating Empire. Left to their own devices, the largest consolidated into independent city-states, marking the "Five Towers Period" — named for the five largest colonies that had pioneered Mana Well exploitation using massive towers built atop them.
The Silence of the Gods (100 BC)
One hundred years before the Cataclysm: every single deity ceased communicating with their mortal worshippers. Globally. Simultaneously. No miracles were granted. No prayers were answered.
The resulting hysteria shattered the spiritual foundation of the Empire. The state church lost all legitimacy overnight. After 40 years of religious panic, the Empire descended into a devastating 60-year civil war. Even when a victor seized the throne, the state was entirely exhausted.
