Media and Propaganda
Media and Propaganda
- What it is: The rapidly expanding network of newspapers, broadsheets, and communication systems that shape public opinion across Altazia.
The invention of the magitech printing press and long-distance communication systems has revolutionized information in Altazia. Daily newspapers and weekly broadsheets have become a staple of urban life, reporting on everything from magitech innovations and dungeon expeditions to international politics and high-society gossip.
For the first time, the general public is rapidly informed of global events. This has drastically shifted the political landscape — governments, Noble Houses, and the Church can no longer completely control the narrative through hearsay and messenger networks.
Propaganda and State Control
Following the devastation of the Splinter Wars, governments quickly realized the power of mass media:
- Narrative Control: Most major newspapers are secretly or overtly funded by political factions. They are used to sway public opinion, drum up nationalism, or smear political rivals.
- Censorship: The state frequently censors sensitive topics — severe Dungeon breakouts, illegal soul magic cults, or the failures of the enforcers.
- Distraction: After the Invasion of Cyoria, the newspapers were used to push feel-good stories (like Raynie's brother rescue) while suppressing details about the saviors of the city and the true nature of the attack.
The Magical Underground
In response to state-controlled media, a robust underground press has emerged. Radical mages, dissenting academics, and marginalized groups use localized, hidden printing presses to distribute pamphlets and manifestos. These publications spread unvarnished truths, but distributing them is highly illegal and heavily prosecuted.
