The Academy System

The Academy System

The traditional method of magical education — a master taking on a single apprentice, training them for years in seclusion — has been largely replaced by the modern Academy System. This is the primary driver behind the Spread of Magical Training and the resulting Technological Revolution.

Academies like the Royal Academy of Magical Arts in Cyoria operate as massive, structured universities. Students attend for a multi-year program divided into specific schools of magic, subjecting themselves to standardized curriculum, rigorous testing, and fierce competition. The academy assigns each student a mentor — an experienced mage who provides personalized instruction and shaping exercises. Some mentors, like the infamous Xvim Chao, are legendary for their demanding methods.

The curriculum covers core disciplines: combat magic, warding, alchemy, alteration, and more. Students are expected to pass certification exams at each year's end to progress. Many also take elective classes to diversify their skills. Graduating from a top-tier academy is the most reliable path to wealth and professional prestige.

The Apprentice Path

Not all mages attend academies. Some still follow the old apprentice-master model, particularly in rural areas or within traditional Noble Houses who maintain private instructors. The academy system's main advantage is scale: it produces hundreds of competent mages per year, whereas the old model produced a handful. However, critics argue that academy graduates lack the depth and flexibility of a privately tutored mage.

Prestige and Politics

Academies are political heavyweights in their own right. They are heavily funded by the Noble Houses and the state, who view them as factories for producing the military and industrial mages necessary to maintain national power. A seat on an academy's governing board is a coveted position of influence.
