Anker
Fixes a matrix to a place, body, or promise so later shapes have somewhere to hang.
How it works
Anker is the stake you drive before you build. In the matrix it pins a reference frame — a doorway, a wrist, a sworn word — so subsequent glyphs resolve relative to that fix instead of drifting with ambient pressure. Fictionally it wants a clear subject: something that can be pointed at, named, or gripped. Without Anker, mobile or long-lived patterns shed integrity the moment the caster's attention flickers. With it, wards linger, portals remember their lips, and seals remember whose blood paid for them.
Combines well with: Siegel (locked seals), Wacht (standing watch), Faden (tethered recall).
Function in Compositions
Anchor glyph. Use it when the fiction needs this verb at the center of the declaration, then dress it with school and scale.
Typical 7-9 Risk Signature
7-9: the fix holds, but the tether marks you or the site for later trouble.
School Affinity Notes
Frequent in Abjuration and Dimensionalism work, but any school may borrow it when the fiction fits.
Usage Examples
- You plant Anker in the dorm threshold so overnight alarms fire only for that doorway, not the whole wing.
- Guard this door alone -> Abjuration -> Anker -> Soft -> threshold, alarm
- During a chase through the Undercity, you nail a temporary fix to a sewer grate so a later blink can find it.
- Leave a recall peg here -> Dimensionalism -> Anker -> Hard -> chase, transit
- In the exam hall you anchor a shared working to the professor's chalk circle so three apprentices cast as one lattice.
- Share the circle as our fix -> Abjuration -> Anker -> Standard -> joint-cast, site
- You fix a tracking pattern to a rival's borrowed cloak — it reports when the cloth leaves the dorm, not the person.
- Watch the cloak, not the wearer -> Divination -> Anker -> Soft -> object, surveillance
- Under duress you Anker a desperation ward to your own sternum; when it breaks, the pain tells you before the spell dies.
- Tether the ward to my breath -> Abjuration -> Anker -> Hard -> body, last-ditch
