Spirits_Overview
Spirits
Spirits are entities that originate from the spiritual plane. There are four major classifications of spirits: Angels, Demons, Elementals, and Fey.
Fundamentally, angels, demons, fey, and elementals are the same thing—spirits. The primary difference lies in their history, their relationship with the gods, and where they choose to reside.
Core Traits of Spirits
- Immortality: Spirits never die of old age. They can only be killed through soul warfare.
- Summoning: Spirits cannot enter the material plane on their own. They must be summoned by somebody. A called spirit cannot call another spirit.
- Afterlife: The afterlife was created by the gods, and only things they chose can enter it. Spirits cannot enter the afterlife.
- Possession: Demonic or spiritual possession is real. Once summoned into the material plane, a spirit doesn't return to the spiritual realm until its current vessel (an ectoplasmic shell, a puppet, or a possessed body) is destroyed. Possession of a body by a soul that doesn't match causes the body to degrade over time.
Native Spirits vs. Spiritual Realm
- Spiritual Realm: The home of Angels and Demons. Humans can enter the spirit world temporarily by separating their soul from their body, but it is extremely dangerous as the spirit world is a savage land inhabited by demons, and angels do not allow soul travelers into their strongholds.
- Native Spirits: Elementals and Fey are considered "native spirits." They left the spiritual planes to settle the material world permanently long before humans built civilizations. They are not involved in the conflicts between angels and demons. Native spirits cannot be banished back to the spiritual realm; they must be sealed or destroyed via soul magic.
