Description
The Sulrothum are a species of large, highly intelligent insects native to the arid wastelands of the Red Valley and Xlotic. They resemble enormous, emaciated wasps that can grow up to 3 meters in length. They are pitch black in color and possess four forward limbs capable of tool use, alongside two hind legs. Though they can rear up to use their hands, they must drop to all six limbs to walk.
Despite their wasp-like appearance, Sulrothum do not possess stingers. They are incredibly strong and durable, and possess fast (though not agile) flight capabilities. As the desertification of Xlotic expanded over the centuries following the Cataclysm, the resilient Sulrothum migrated northward, conquering indigenous species and asserting dominance over the deep desert.
Biology & Lifecycle
- Metamorphosis: Their young hatch as non-sapient, maggot-like creatures. Within months, they metamorphose into smaller, flightless "youths" who are fully sapient and spend 6–8 years learning and acting as domestic servants.
- Lifespan: A healthy Sulrothum can live up to 65 years, though violent territorial disputes and diseases often cut this short.
- Biology: They lack vocal cords capable of human speech but are more than intelligent enough to understand human languages and invent complex tools.
Culture & Religion
- Theocracy: Sulrothum society is intensely religious and entirely driven by omens and prophecies. Their primary deity is the Sun Goddess, and they view themselves as favored celestial agents and direct descendants of angels.
- Rituals: They make heavy use of hallucinogenic desert plants during religious ceremonies to receive "divine visions." Fire is considered sacred.
- Technology: Originally a stone-age culture, they continuously study looted goods and interrogate captives to adopt human technology, though they still struggle to master complex magitech or firearms.
- Non-Hive: Despite being giant insects, they are emphatically not a hive mind. They are highly individualistic, though intensely loyal to their tribes and religious taboos.

Capabilities & Magic
- Physical Prowess: Their chitin makes them extraordinarily tough, and their physical strength allows them to overpower humans easily in melee.
- Soul Mages: Sulrothum have a strong tradition of shamanistic magic, particularly mind defenses, protective wards, and potent Soul Magic.
- Beast Taming: Advanced tribes, such as the one holding the Ziggurat of the Sun, have mentally dominated massive, flight-capable sandworms that possess natural psychic immunities.
Campaign Notes
- Seen primarily as dangerous desert raiders by Eldemar humans, though they can be traded with if a party respects their religious taboos.
- A major obstacle for players attempting to explore the deep desert of Xlotic or retrieve the Imperial Ring from the Ziggurat of the Sun. They are resistant to normal mental magic due to "divine favor" (or extremely well-trained tribal mind-defenses).
