The Academy System

The Academy System

The traditional method of magical education—a master taking on a single apprentice—has been largely replaced by the modern Academy System. This shift is the primary driver behind the Spread of Magical Training and the resulting Technological Revolution.

Structure and Curriculum

Academies like the Cyorian Academy operate as massive, highly structured universities. Students are subjected to rigorous standardized testing, structured curriculums, and intense competition. The curriculum is divided into specific schools of magic (e.g., Abjuration, Dimensionalism, Evocation), forcing students to specialize early to meet the demands of the magitech economy.

Prestige and Politics

Graduating from a top-tier academy is a ticket to wealth and power. The academies themselves are political heavyweights, often possessing more wealth and influence than local governments. They are heavily funded by the Noble Houses and the state, who view the academies as factories for producing the military and industrial mages necessary to maintain national power.

Student Debt and Pressure

The cost of attending an academy is astronomical. While wealthy Noble Houses can easily afford the tuition, commoners or lesser nobility often take on massive, crushing debt sponsored by the state or private guilds. This creates immense pressure on students to succeed and secure high-paying jobs immediately upon graduation. The academic environment is notoriously cutthroat, with sabotage, intense rivalry, and burnout being common occurrences.
