Spell Formula

Spell Formula

Spell formulas are the practice of using geometric shapes and various sigils to limit mana flow along pre-determined pathways to modify spells. They anchor spells into a carefully-crafted diagram to make them persist indefinitely, forming the basis of permanent wards and magical items.

Mechanical Hook: Prepared Magic

Players with dots in Spell Formula can inscribe their magic into items. Casting an inscribed spell from a completed formula is extremely fast (narratively instantaneous or a single free action), greatly shortening the cast time compared to normal Shaping. However, activating an inscribed formula is inefficient and costs double the usual mana (e.g., a Tier 2 inscribed spell costs 4 mana to activate).

Mechanical Focus

Designing and inscribing a Spell Formula is a slow, meticulous process. Rolls to craft or modify spell formulas typically use Calculation or Finesse paired with Academics (representing mathematical expertise and magic theory).

Creating a formula requires:

  1. The Schematic: Knowledge of the formula design.
  2. The Anchor: A physical item able to withstand the mana channeled through it.
  3. The Base Spells: The creator must be able to cast and anchor all the underlying spells into the formula.

Tier Examples

Tier Example Effect Description
Tier 1 Beginner's Cube / Single-Use Ward Basic geometric anchoring. Can store a simple Tier 1 spell (like Ignition or Luminescence) into an object to be triggered with a command word.
Tier 2 Combat Focus / Minor Trigger Can store a Tier 2 spell into an item, or set up simple "if-then" activation triggers (e.g., activating when dropped, or only for a specific user).
Tier 3 Complex Item (Three-Spell Ring) Fitting multiple different spells into a small base item without them interfering. This allows for items with multiple functions or layered defense wards.
Tier 4 Compressed Formula Compressing a complex diagram to fit in a tiny space, making it impossible for rivals to simply copy line-by-line while retaining full functionality.
Tier 5 Permanent Infrastructure Masterpieces of mathematical magic. Constructing city-wide wards, permanent teleportation gates, or indestructible magical artifacts.

Lore Deep Dive

Spell formulas are notoriously difficult. The anchor must be able to withstand the mana being channeled through it, and the physical material it is carved into should not disrupt the spell boundary. This frequently necessitates the use of highly expensive, exotic materials in anchor construction.

Copying vs. Creating: Even simply copying an existing spell formula can be challenging. It requires high manual dexterity, immense patience, and the ability to cast and anchor all of the necessary spells into the final product. However, if a mage wants to actually modify the diagram even slightly, the difficulty skyrockets—requiring a massive amount of theoretical knowledge and mathematical expertise to pull off without the formula exploding or fizzling.

The Economic Reality: Because of this extreme difficulty, true spell formula experts tend to be very rare and extremely well paid. However, because the high demand for spell formula experts makes their services too expensive for the average person, a massive number of mages end up "dabbling" in the field out of sheer necessity.
