Negation
Negation
Classification: Specialization
Parent School: Projection
Negation (formerly "Abjuration") is the art of dispelling, disrupting, or negating other magical effects. It is a must-have discipline for every mage, serving as the reactive and stabilizing shield that unmakes other magic.
Specialization Rules
This is an advanced Specialization. To learn Spells (Powers) in this field, a mage must use their dot-purchase selections from the Projection skill track. Furthermore, specific spells within Negation will explicitly require a secondary prerequisite (such as 1 or 2 dots in collateral Schools) to simulate the mixed-matrix required to cast them.
Progression
Acquiring dots and Powers here requires deep dedication. The spells are extremely potent but narrowly focused.
Example Powers
| Tier | Example Effect | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Ward Flicker | A brief shimmer that deflects minor environmental hazards or absorbs 1 point of damage. |
| Tier 2 | Dispel Binding | Unravel a Tier 1-2 maintained spell matrix (e.g., a sustained light or lock effect). |
| Tier 3 | Active Dispel | Aggressively unravels any sustained spell matrix of Tier 3 or lower, including Wards. |
| Tier 4 | Greater Dome | A solid barrier that can withstand siege-level kinetic force. Withstands Tier 3 spells passively. |
| Tier 5 | City-Wide Veil | A massive screen that blocks all hostile scrying, teleportation, or Projection spells into an area. |
Mechanical Focus
Negation adds to Mind Defense when used reactively. When used offensively, it contests the target spellcaster's Willpower to forcibly unravel their active matrices.
Lore Deep Dive
Negation is the ultimate safety net of the magical world. It is considered a must-have discipline for every practicing mage. In fact, the authorities of most civilized nations force mages to attain a certain level of skill in Negation before they can be legally certified. Mages with absolutely no negation skills cannot terminate their own spells if something goes wrong, cannot ensure proper safety if they try to teach magic to others, and generally represent a massive public hazard.
The Economic Reality: With the explosion of the mage population in modern times, the demand for professionals capable of dealing with hostile magic, wild spell accidents, and magical hazards has increased dramatically. This makes Negation a highly respected, relatively popular, and very profitable field of specialization.
