Evocation
Evocation
Classification: Specialization
Parent School: Projection
Evocation is the aggressive, destructive application of the Projection discipline. It is the backbone of what is commonly referred to as "Combat Magic," focusing on the rapid generation of heat, kinetic force, and elemental energy.
Specialization Rules
This is an advanced Specialization. To learn Spells (Powers) in this field, a mage must use their dot-purchase selections from the Projection skill track. Furthermore, specific spells within Evocation will explicitly require a secondary prerequisite (such as 1 or 2 dots in collateral Schools) to simulate the mixed-matrix required to cast them.
Progression
Acquiring dots and Powers here requires deep dedication. The spells are extremely potent but narrowly focused.
Example Powers
| Tier | Example Effect | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Force Push | A quick burst of kinetic energy that can knock a target off balance or shatter a wooden door. |
| Tier 2 | Firebolt | Projects a concentrated sphere of thermal energy that detonates on impact. |
| Tier 3 | Lightning Arc | Unleashes a volatile stream of electricity that can chain between closely grouped metallic targets. |
| Tier 4 | Disintegrate | A highly concentrated, armor-piercing beam of pure destructive energy that atomizes matter. |
| Tier 5 | Inferno | Generates a massive, self-sustaining firestorm capable of incinerating an entire city block. |
Lore Deep Dive
The Core of Combat Magic:
While virtually all magic has some sort of combat application, Evocation is designed specifically for war. It focuses on incredibly fast casting times, overcoming opponent defenses, and requiring zero preparation.
The Trade-Off (Speed vs. Safety):
Evocation is deceptively simple. The shaping requirements for throwing a fireball are relatively modest, meaning a dedicated mage can learn it quickly. However, the traits that make Evocation so potent in battle come at a severe cost: it strips away mana efficiency and all structural safety features. Evocation places extreme demands on the mage’s mana reserves, and getting the shaping wrong is highly likely to result in the spell detonating in the caster's own face.
Elemental vs. Kinetic:
Evocation does not create "real" fire or "real" lightning. It projects pure magical energy that mimics those effects (heat, electricity, physical force). Because of this, an Evocation fire will extinguish the moment the caster stops feeding it mana, unless it catches mundane fuel on fire in the process.
Design Boundaries
Evocation CAN:
- Deal massive, instantaneous elemental or kinetic damage.
- Be cast incredibly quickly, making it ideal for chaotic firefights.
- Overwhelm physical and magical shielding through sheer brute force.
Evocation CANNOT:
- Create permanent matter (that requires Alteration or Conjuration).
- Be sustained efficiently. Evocation burns through mana reserves faster than almost any other discipline.
- Differentiate between friend and foe. An explosion hits everything in its radius.
