Glamour
Glamour
Classification: Specialization
Parent School: Illusionism
Glamour is the specialized application of Illusionism focused on personal disguise, aesthetic alteration, and subtly deceiving the senses of others regarding the caster's appearance or nature.
Specialization Rules
This is an advanced Specialization. To learn Spells (Powers) in this field, a mage must use their dot-purchase selections from the Illusionism skill track. Furthermore, specific spells within Glamour will explicitly require a secondary prerequisite (such as 1 or 2 dots in collateral Schools) to simulate the mixed-matrix required to cast them.
Progression
Acquiring dots and Powers here requires deep dedication. The spells are extremely potent but narrowly focused.
Example Powers
| Tier | Example Effect | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Minor Disguise | Alters the color of the caster's hair, eyes, or clothing temporarily. |
| Tier 2 | Voice Mimicry | Flawlessly replicates the voice and vocal cadence of a specific individual the caster has heard. |
| Tier 3 | Full Persona | A comprehensive, multi-sensory optical illusion that completely masks the caster's physical appearance, making them look like a different person. |
| Tier 4 | Scent & Heat Masking | Weaves additional energies into the glamour to fool exotic senses, such as thermal vision or a werewolf's sense of smell. |
| Tier 5 | Tangible Disguise | Employs Conjuration to make the disguise physically solid. A guard patting the caster down will feel the fake armor instead of the caster's real robes. |
Lore Deep Dive
The Decline of Illusion:
In ancient times, when mages were rare and the general public had a fuzzy conception of magic, a simple visual glamour could easily cow a superstitious peasant or allow an assassin to walk right past a king's guard. Today, with the explosion of magical literacy, this is no longer true. People are suspicious. A guard who sees a slightly shimmering, entirely silent nobleman will immediately recognize an obvious illusion.
The Complexity of True Deception:
Because modern society is so magically aware, modern Glamour is incredibly difficult to practice successfully. A true disguise cannot just be an intangible ghost made of light and sound. Skilled illusionists must weave in thermal energies, olfactory components (smell), and even employ Conjuration to make the illusion physically tangible to the touch.
Mind Magic vs. Optics:
Some illusionists cheat by employing mental compulsions (Mind Magic) to force the target to ignore flaws in the disguise. However, the very presence of mind magic can trigger a ward or alert a sensitive mage that something is wrong, meaning mental glamours are not strictly better than purely optical ones.
Design Boundaries
Glamour CAN:
- Completely alter the visual, auditory, and olfactory presentation of a target.
- Be layered with Conjuration to provide physical, tactile feedback to a disguise.
- Be cast over willing allies or objects (e.g., making a sword look like a walking stick).
Glamour CANNOT:
- Actually change the physical structure of the target (that requires Transformation or Alteration). If a human casts a glamour to look like a dwarf, they are still physically tall and will bump their head on low ceilings.
- Prevent a target from disbelieving the illusion. Disbelieving an optical glamour does nothing—the image is physically constructed of light and sound. It must be dispelled or physically disrupted.
