Golemancy
Golemancy
Classification: Specialization
Parent School: Animation Class
Golemancy is the respected craft of constructing, animating, and programming complex artificial constructs. Golemancers use specialized mana cores and intricate shaping matrices to power their creations.
Specialization Rules
This is an advanced Specialization. To learn Spells (Powers) in this field, a mage must use their dot-purchase selections from the Animation Class skill track. Furthermore, specific spells within Golemancy will explicitly require a secondary prerequisite (such as 1 or 2 dots in collateral Schools) to simulate the mixed-matrix required to cast them.
Progression
Acquiring dots and Powers here requires deep dedication. The spells are extremely potent but narrowly focused.
Example Powers
| Tier | Example Effect | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Clay Figurine | Animates a tiny clay construct that can perform extremely simple, repetitive tasks or act as a minor distraction. |
| Tier 2 | Gravel Golem | Forms a basic, human-sized golem from loose rocks and earth for manual labor or simple defense. |
| Tier 3 | Stone Hound | Animates a specialized, agile stone construct capable of tracking, guarding, and following complex commands. |
| Tier 4 | Bound Sentinel | Creates a heavily armored, permanent golem guardian bound to a specific location or person, powered by an internal core. |
| Tier 5 | Awaken Intelligence | Imbues a highly advanced golem with a pseudo-soul, granting it independent thought, personality, and problem-solving abilities. |
Lore Deep Dive
The Illusion of Life:
Golemancy is a highly advanced application of the Animation discipline. Spells in this field work by infusing a portion of the caster's mind into an inanimate target, granting it a measure of autonomy and independence. However, because the spell relies entirely on the caster’s own mind and knowledge, a golem cannot perform complex actions that the caster themselves does not understand.
The Mundane Requirement:
Animation spells rely heavily on the physical properties of the object being animated. A golem made of poorly stacked rocks will crumble when it tries to run. Therefore, successful golemancers almost always possess one or more mundane crafting skills (such as blacksmithing, masonry, or sculpting) that they practice side-by-side with their magic. A beautifully forged steel automaton will always outperform a crudely animated pile of scrap.
Mindless Constructs:
Like undead, basic golems are mindless constructs. They follow their programmed instructions literally and lack the ability to adapt to entirely new situations unless directly puppeteered by the caster. They are immune to Mind Magic and feel no pain.
Design Boundaries
Golemancy CAN:
- Create tireless, loyal physical servants for labor or combat.
- Program complex, conditional triggers for the golem to follow.
- Utilize mundane materials (stone, iron, wood) to dictate the construct's physical durability.
Golemancy CANNOT:
- Create true, independent sapience (without extreme, highly illegal Soul Magic intervention).
- Animate living beings (Animation can technically target the living, but Golemancy specifically deals with inanimate constructs).
